A & M Art Fight - Written Guide

This is the official A & M Art Fight scoring guide for written works, defined as works of art made by way of written language.

We have guides for specific written mediums. To find which guide you should use, check if your work falls under the descriptions and click on the medium that applies. If none of the mediums work or you are unsure which medium/subcategory fits your attack, contact a moderator for help.

NOTE: These guides are better viewed on desktop rather than mobile.

One Shot

A self-contained story over 2000 words.

Series

A story spanning more than two chapters.

Short Works

Works with less than 2000 words and/or have more than 3 structured elements (stanzas, paragraphs or blocks).


One Shot

A - Target
Refers to who you are attacking or if it's your first attack.
Points Subcategory Definition
2 First Attack Your first attack of the event. Nice work! You may only apply this bonus once for the entire event.
1 Regular Attack More attacks, more points! Any attack done towards the opposing team if it is not your first attack count.
0.5 Friendly Fire A nice gift for a teammate. :) Only applies to works where the opponent is on the same team as yourself.
0 Weekly Prompt / Lost Prompt Nothing catching your eye? Use the weekly event prompts! If you don’t remember the prompt you’re using, you will not get prompt bonuses.
B - Length
Refers to the block (stanza, paragraph) or word count. Works are rounded down to the lower scoring subcategory if it falls in between two subcategories.
Points Subcategory Definition
1 Short 2000 - 4900 words.
2 Medium 5000 - 9900 words.
3 Long 10000 - 15000 words.
5 Very Long 16000+ words. Any lengths longer than 16000 words do not provide bonus points.
C - Technical Skill
Defined by basic sentence and paragraph construction.
Points Subcategory Definition
0.5 Consistency Grammar, spelling, capitalization and syntax is consistent in the work. The tense or voice used stays the same throughout the work.
1 Proper Breaks The work is blocked and formatted into meaningful paragraphs. Single sentences are properly used for impactful scenes or descriptions.
1 Great Prose The work is engaging and has a good voice, either from smooth word flow or immersive storytelling.
D - Detail
Refers to creative use of language to create motifs and symbolism.
Points Subcategory Definition
0.25 Easter Eggs / References There are some references present within the work that adds a minimal layer of detail without detracting from the story as a whole.
1 Thoughtful Symbolism The language evokes emotions or creates a sensory experience by giving words or scenes literal and figurative significance in the work as a whole.
1 Consistent and Meaningful Motifs There exist motifs, defined as recurrent thematic elements, that provide depth in meaning and thought within the work.
E - Language
Refers to presentation of interactions and explorations within the work.
Points Subcategory Definition
1 Credible Interactions The work features interactions between characters that are in line with their behaviors and beliefs in the canon content.
1 In-depth Explorations The work focuses on an internal struggle of a specific character and explores what their reactions and thoughts could be as they work through it.
1 Compelling Arc An arc, defined by the evolution of a personality through the story, adds a relevant or meaningful impact to the story in the context of a character.
F - Flow
Refers to the plot progression and clarity of the overall work.
Points Subcategory Definition
0.5 Thematic Relevance The story itself is relevant in some way to the prompt used by setting up a basic plot structure: exposition, climax, resolution.
1 Clear Plot Direction Each plot structure element (exposition, climax, resolution) can be easily identified in the work and does not muddle the flow of progression.
Penalties
Refers to any element that is detrimental to the work as a whole.
Points Subcategory Definition
-1 Inconsistent or Poor Characterization The characters featured in the work act in manners inconsistent with canon material or interpreted in a way that seems antithesis to their canon counterpart.
-1 Poor Plot Progression The work does not properly set up the plot or the way the plot is progressed through the story does not make sense or is poorly handled.
-1 Technical Errors The work features more than ten errors or inconsistencies with grammar, spelling, capitalizations or syntax. Certain elements, such as run-on sentences or conflicting descriptions and terminology, prevent a smooth reading of the work.
